US: Senate panel schedules FTC oversight hearing

 |  November 21, 2018

A US Senate subcommittee will hold an oversight hearing on the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) next week, the panel said, noting that one issue to be raised is whether the FTC should have more authority to protect consumer privacy and ensure that companies safeguard consumer data.

The Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee’s Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety, Insurance, and Data Security set the hearing for next Tuesday. It will also discuss the agency’s role in enforcing antitrust law and fighting fraud and effects of technology changes.

The five witnesses are FTC Chairman Joe Simons, Republican Commissioners Noah Phillips and Christine Wilson, and Democratic Commissioners Rohit Chopra and Rebecca Kelly Slaughter.
